From 2016 onward to 2017

The first International Science Center and Science Museum Day (ISCSMD), held November 10, 2016, was an undeniable success. We celebrated science centers and science museums in the context of UNESCO’s World Science Day for Peace and Development, and science centers worldwide demonstrated how they are addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the world’s nations in late 2015, in a variety of ways.

From the reactions we have collected, many science centers and science museums (about 40%) had not heard about the SDGs before the first ISCSMD. Among the majority that had, institutions were inspired by the event to review their exhibitions and programs to identify direct and indirect connections. As a result we collected numerous stories and creative examples that helped shine a spotlight on the role of science centers and science museums and helped other institutions become inspired to join in. In all, more than 300 institutions put a dot on the world map on the ISCSMD website to mark their participation.

Thanks to collective power represented by that map—and the valuable relationships advanced in the frame of a high-level forum at UNESCO World Headquarters on the first ISCSMD—many officials and international organizations have become extremely intrigued by the potential impact a partnership with our field holds for the future implementation of the SDGs.

The final rush to be part of the event in 2016, and what we have learned from people who did not join in last year but are eager to do so in 2017, convinced all the world’s science center networks that we need to celebrate another edition of ISCSMD this year, on November 10, 2017, and that the SDGs should remain central.
